21 Days of Chinese

New Year

Chinese New Year is the largest holiday in the Chinese calendar, integrating themes of friends, family, home and food.

The days leading up to Chinese New Year are filled with activity. Each day, families fulfill their traditional obligations in preparation for this large event.

Come to the Garden and see our many displays and decorations as we celebrate the 21 Days of Chinese New Year!

 

February 8

25th Day of the Twelfth Month

Gate guardian pictures are pasted on gates and doors to protect the house and its occupants.

 

February 9

26th Day of the Twelfth Month

-Women and children buy woodblock prints

-Flower fairs begin selling holiday flowers including azaleas, narcissus, plum blossoms, camelia and evergreens

-Oranges and tangerines appear in the markets along with other candied fruit for the traditional 8-sided "tray of togetherness"

To celebrate the 21 Days of Chines New Year AND the Winter Olympics, the Garden will be open 9:30am-5pm, February 8-28.
