Shaping the Courtyard FAQ
What can we use the $300 for?
Relevant expenses to turn your project from idea to execution. The $300 must be used towards the project relevant to the event. This can include:
▫ Materials and production costs for pop-up structure
▫ Product development
▫ Design costs
▫ Human resources (honorarium, contractors fee, etc)
▫ Other miscellaneous costs in doing business (eg: payment processing costs)
Does the product or service have to be sellable?
Yes, we are looking for submissions of sellable products or services of any form that showcase creativity and entrepreneurship and contribute towards the revitalization of the empty courtyard.
Do we have to sell the product or service during the event?
Yes, the event provides you with an opportunity to test and explore the entrepreneurial scope of your products or services.
Do we get to keep the revenue we made?
Yes, you may keep the money. However, we encourage you to pay it forward by donating a small portion of your profit to the future participants of next year's courtyard activation project.
Can we just design some public installation that can be displayed during the event?
We are looking for business ideas that are sellable. These can include but are not limited to arts, crafts, food or designs. If you have a great idea for a public installation that can accommodate a sellable product we encourage you to pair up with someone who has a product and needs help with the presentation and showcase. Feel free to ask for collaborators on the Garden’s Facebook or Twitter page.
Is the placemaking event happening inside the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden?
No, the event is happening in the public Sun Yat-Sen Memorial courtyard in front of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park and Chinese Cultural Centre.
Who is the organizer of this event?
The courtyard placemaking event is a collaboration between Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and Dunefield Consulting.
Do submissions have to be in teams or can individuals apply?
We generally encourage teams to apply. However if you are an individual with a strong business idea that fits our criteria you are welcome to apply as well.
Is there a maximum number of members in a team?
There is no maximum number, but we recommend a project team size between 3-6 people.
What permits do I need to sell my products on the day of the event?
We, as the organizers, will take care of the Special Event Permit that allows us to host the event at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Courtyard. If you intend to cook and sell food or any type of beverages, you will need to have a Temporary Food Booth Permit issued by Vancouver Coastal Health. You are required to submit your application to us at least 14 working days before August 23 and we will forward it to Vancouver Coastal Health.
Please note you will also need to have a FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate when you prepare and serve food or beverages to the public.
Do I need to apply for the Food Safe Level 1 certificate myself?
Yes, that is your responsibility. You will need to have the certificate prior to participating in Help Shape The Courtyard. You can sign up for the FOODSAFE training programs online.
