Executive Director since 2006, Kathy Gibler has been an integral part of the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society for 14 years. Prior to becoming Executive Director, she was on the Board of Trustees for seven years. As Board President, Kathy guided the Garden through a major expansion from 2002 to 2004, and previously served with the Garden as a docent, tour guide, and president of volunteers.
A successful independent business owner, Kathy lived and worked for a major international company in China for six years, speaks Mandarin, consulted on Chinatown’s revitalization efforts for eight years, and has served on tourism, arts and cultural committees at the municipal, provincial and national level. As Executive Director, Kathy brings a rare combination of business acumen, cultural understanding and a clear vision of the Garden’s role in the community.
Kathy believes the Garden is a vital cultural connector between Asian and other cultures and has spearheaded a vibrant program of concerts, education, festivals and most recently, interactive theatre. She also sees the Garden as increasingly crucial to the neighbourhood and the city as a rare sanctuary in a world where the pace of life continues to accelerate.
Kathy’s enthusiasm, passion and humility are a tremendous asset to the Garden. Having worked at every level of the organization, she has an unrivalled understanding of the needs of its staff and volunteers as well as a keen ability to provide educational, artistic, and cultural programming that will assure the Garden continues to be a unique and vibrant venue for Vancouver’s local community and a wider public.
