Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and On Main are thrilled to announce the book launch and release of Paul Wong’s Occupying Chinatown, a beautifully detailed, limited edition hardcover book, fully bilingual in English and Simplified Chinese, focusing on several of Wong’s major artworks exploring Chinese-Canadian identity and his engagement with Vancouver’s Chinese communities.
The book launch is free and will be taking place on September 11th at the Gardens Scholar’s Study and Courtyard, in two different 60-minute time slots: the first starting at 2:00pm and the second at 3:00pm.
Paul Wong will be saying a few words and acknowledgments at the beginning of each hour and become available to chat and sign your copy of the book, which will be sold exclusively throughout the event.
Limited to 40 people per time slot.
With full colour photos and documentation of Wong’s artwork as well as three original essays, Occupying Chinatown, is heavily inspired by 900 letters sent to Suk-Fong Wong, Paul Wong’s mother, over the course of 65 years, and evokes exploration of language, amnesia, and cultural displacement.
Occupying Chinatown has provided a conceptual frame for inspiring a prolific outpouring of artworks combining fragments of memory, language, and ephemeral histories. It has continued and will continue to allow me to look at everyday things as anything but ordinary. — Paul Wong
On Main is grateful to the funders: The Canada Council, The Audain Foundation, and Rick Erickson and Donna Partridge.
