Pride in Chinatown 2019
August 1 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Join in this one-night-only magical twilight event in the heart of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. This very special event will take over Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and the public courtyard. Pride in Chinatown celebrates queer Asian-Canadian art and artists, tantalizing all five senses.
Curated by Paul Wong and presented by On Main Gallery, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and Vancouver Art and Leisure as part of Alternative Pride Vancouver 2019. This will be an interdisciplinary art experience that will feature new experimental and traditional art forms which include electronic music, immersive theatre, media art installations, lion dancing, martial arts, drums, opera, culinary treats, drag and other non-binary encounters:
House of Rice, Vancouver’s only all Asian drag family, will be inhabiting the Garden’s China Maple Hall and will play host to all those who wish to enter their oeuvre
Onibana Taiko will perform thunderous drumming from atop the Ting
DJ Witch Nancy will provide evocative electronic music in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers
Classical pianist Rachel Iwaasa will be performing a silent conceptual work
Chimerik 似不像 collective will weave two distinct qi gong martial arts styles – Nature Centre Gong自然中心功 with Northern Shaolin 北少林 into a new hybrid form
Feral, from the Vancouver Strength Collective, will perform Praying Mantis
The Chau Luen Athletic Club will demonstrate hand fighting and sword dancing manoeuvres
Out-loud trans wizard Tien Neo Eamas will transform into the Floating Deity of the 8 Eternal Realms
The celebration will kick-start with an all female Lion Dance headed by Dora Ng. DJ Don Chow will provide classic disco beats and traditional Chinese rhythms in the courtyard and Love Intersections will be showcasing traditional Chinese aphrodisiacs. Edible Projects will be concocting special elixirs and providing culinary treats. Candie Tanaka and Mobil Art will be offering participatory art projects, and See You Soon Studio will be selling her original textile art. Little Mountain Shop will be offering a curated selection of works by local queer artisans and designers.
