Sung Dynasty Tea Demonstration

September 21, 2019
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

September 21 @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm

An afternoon tea gathering exploring Tang-Sung Dynasty powdered green tea preparation styles

Tickets: $20 for general public | $5 for annual pass holders
Max. 20 people

bryan mulvihill has researched the powdered green tea (Ma Cha) through the study of period tea utensils housed in museums around the world, along with carefully observing living traditions in Korea and Japan. These two countries have developed a re-creation of the Sung Ma Cha Tea gathering, whereas this style of tea preparation has long disappeared in China. bryan has commissioned `New Antique’ Sung Ma Cha utensils in Jingdezhen, which are on display as part of the CHAJI group exhibition.

bryan will demonstrate various forms of powdered tea preparations from its early use in Tang Dynasty Chan temples to the Sung Dynasty Literati Tea Gatherings in Suzhou garden pavilions. The presentation will include actual preparation of powdered tea along with Macha tastings.

bryan mulvihill is the co-founder of the World Tea Party, which has hosted tea gatherings around the world at Art Fairs, International Museums, Historical Events and Tea Research Institutes.
