Music Under the Moon Contest

Enter for a chance to win $500 and perform at the 2018 Mid-Autumn Moon Festival on Friday, September 21, 2018!

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is searching for musical talents to celebrate one of the largest festivals in the Chinese calendar. For centuries, the full moon has inspired countless Chinese literati to compose music and poetry that unite family and friends. As we come together to celebrate the moon with utmost reverence, the Garden hopes to showcase talented local musicians who support cultural heritage and diversity.

PRIZE
Winner: $500 Cash | Runner-up: $300 Cash

HOW TO ENTER
Solo artists and groups with less than ten members are welcome to enter the contest. Upload a video of your performance to YouTube or Vimeo with the hashtag #MidAutumnMusic, and fill out an online entry form.

Five contestants will be selected for a private audition at the Garden. A judging panel will select two contestants to proceed to the final at the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The winner and runner-up will be determined by live audience voting.

ELIGIBILITY

Age
Contestants aged 18 and under are required to submit a guardian consent letter.

Eligible Repertoire
All performances must belong to one of the following repertories:

  1. Original compositions in Chinese dialects or a mix of Chinese dialects with other languages
  2. Music performances with traditional Chinese musical instruments
  3. Music performances related to the moon

Video Guideline

  1. Professionally produced videos are not required, but the videos should be recorded with good lighting and sound quality between January 1, 2018 to September 7, 2018.
  2. Videos must be appropriate for all ages and contain no political content and coarse language.
  3. The faces of the contestants and live musical instruments (if applicable) must be visible in the videos.

THE AUDITION

  1. The selected five contestants are required to perform live at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in front of a judging panel on the evening of Friday, September 14, 2018. No lip-syncing or overdubs is allowed.
  2. The judging panel consists of music professionals from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music and staff members from Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.
  3. Each contestant has five (5) minutes to perform.
  4. Contestants are responsible for their own expenses, which include travel, meal, transport, accommodation, apparel, musical instrument, and any other equipment that the Garden cannot provide.

THE FINAL

  1. The two finalists must be available to perform live at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden on Friday, September 21, 2018, from 5pm to 9:30pm.
  2. Contestants are responsible for their own expenses, which include travel, meal, transport, accommodation, apparel, musical instrument, and any other equipment that the Garden cannot provide.
  3. The Garden will provide up to four (4) microphones and two (2) speakers for the contestant’s final performance.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Videos and performances that meet the above criteria will be selected.
  2. Selected videos and performances are judged based on creativity, artistry, stage presence, and level of entertainment.
  3. The Garden and Judges’ decisions are final.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. All prizes will be awarded to the name as it appears in the entry form. The division of prizes among group members is the responsibility of the winner/runner-up.
  2. The cash prizes are in Canadian currency and issued in the form of a cheque. The prizes must be picked up in person at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden within 30 days of notification.
  3. The Garden may request contestants to participate in additional promotional activities relating to the contest and Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, including interviews and photoshoots.
  4. Each contestant grants permission to the Garden to use his/her image, voice, name, and video for all promotional purposes related to the contest and future Garden programs without additional compensation.
  5. The Garden reserves the right of veto over the choice of music or song for the audition and final.
  6. The Garden has the right to require proof of identity and/or eligibility. Failure to provide such proof within a reasonable time could result in disqualification from the contest.
  7. The Garden reserves the right to disqualify any contestants at its sole discretion if their submissions 1) contain untruthful, inaccurate, or misleading information and 2) do not meet the eligible requirements.
  8. The Garden reserves the right to amend the contest rules or terminate the contest at any time without any liability to any contestant.
  9. The Garden reserves the right to replace any contestant who is disqualified from or unable to participate in any aspect of the contest.
  10. The Garden, its volunteers, judges, and representatives are not responsible for any liability, injury, damages or loss that may result, directly or indirectly from the contestant’s participation in the contest, or the prizes to be delivered hereunder.
  11. By entering the contest, all contestants and/or their legal guardians agree to observe the contest Rules and Regulations, behave appropriately when taking part in the audition and final, and be bound by the decisions of the Garden and its judges.
