C.D. ALISON BAILEY - BOARD MEMBER
Alison holds a BA, MA and a PhD in Chinese literature (modern and pre-modern), and has researched, taught and published on Chinese literature, language, culture, and history for more than two decades. For the last seventeen years, her academic home has been UBC’s Department of Asian Studies and the Institute of Asian Research. Alison is fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese and in reading classical Chinese; she also lived and worked in Beijing for nearly four years, and returns frequently for work-related trips.
As former Director of the Centre of Chinese Research (CCR) at UBC (2003-2011), Alison organized large numbers of public events, including international conferences, talks, seminars, film showings, art shows, and musical performances. During her tenure, the CCR became one of the most active centres at UBC, with over 25 events per academic year. Alison also served as director of China Links: Professional Seminars at UBC (2010-2012) – a training program in China promoting engagement with North American business, government and NGO representatives.
Alison believes that the Garden provides a haven of beauty and quiet energy that is at once symbolic of Vancouver and BC’s long-standing links with Chinese communities, and evocative of the aesthetic traditions of Chinese garden culture. She has spent many pleasant hours in the Garden over the years, and is honoured to be helping guide its future path. She enjoys the ways in which nature, music, art, and performance all intermingle in the Garden, and over the coming years wants to continue to explore the promotion of traditional Chinese activities. Alison also hopes to engage those new Chinese communities currently unfamiliar with Chinatown and the Garden.
