ROSALIND BRECKNER - BOARD MEMBER
Ros Breckner has been involved with Vancouver community projects for decades. Having spent time in Alberta and Ontario, she arrived in the city in the 1972, and quickly became involved with food co-ops, housing co-ops and a small credit union. Alongside various other endeavors, Ros helped found the East Van bakery Uprising Breads, which continues to thrive to this day.
It was with a view to ensuring the viability and sustainability of these community projects that, in her late thirties, Ros went to study accountancy. She was awarded the bronze medal in her graduating class. With the skills she gained, Ros came to learn how successful organizations manage relationships with local government, and helped many non-profit groups to flourish.
Ros took her first guided tour of the Garden in 1986, and has been a member ever since. Despite having retired, she also continues to be an active member at both Strathcona Community Gardens and the Strathcona Resident’s Association, a volunteer at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, and the treasurer for her strata. She also spent a number of years on the board of Vancouver Native Health.
During her time as a member of the Garden, Ros has witnessed drastic changes in the character of nearby neighbourhoods, and wants to ensure that the Garden responds positively to these shifts. Ros is focused on balancing the Garden’s role as both a community resource and a major tourist destination, and wants to inspire a sense of pride and connection in the residents of Chinatown, Strathcona and the Downtown Eastside.
