Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is an internationally recognized cultural and educational facility that offers extensive professional training for a range of individuals. The Volunteer Program offers direct work experience in events, retail, educational programming, garden tours, garden maintenance, cultural festivals, events and office administration. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Docent/Cultural Interpreter

Docents lead 45-minute public tours for visitors and provide insights about Chinese gardens, history, culture, and philosophy. The position is ideal for fine tuning public speaking and group facilitation skills. All new Docents are required to shadow a minimum of 3 tours during their training period and be available to lead at least 2 tours per week for a minimum of 4 months.

Education and Programming

Assist the Education and program manager to implement educational and public groups. This could be in a variety of areas such as cultural history, identity, heritage, garden plants and animals, which would include field trips, school groups and private tours.

Arts and Community

Assist with arts and crafts, workshops, community events and yearly festivals such as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Assistants must be available for a volunteer orientation and help with at least 2 events per year.

* Individuals who have experience in visual arts, music, dance, design, media, crafts, storytelling, working with kids, teaching and workshops are greatly welcomed.

Events and Rentals Assistant

Assist with a variety of private rentals which include photo shoots, weddings and corporate rentals. Tasks involved are such: welcoming and greeting guests, event lay out, set-up and tear down and take part in site visits. Support in ensuring that the event fulfills the vision of the customer. The hours of private rentals can vary immensely and volunteers who sign up should be informed, before taking on this commitment.

Garden Maintenance and Conservation

Cleaning, sweeping, racking and maintaining the garden. Weeding, de-mossing of pebbles and re-soiling of tree beds in the spring. Experience the process of conservation projects. Garden Assistants must be available for training and helping in the Garden at least once a month for a minimum of 3 months.

Gift Shop Assistant

Assist with inventory, display, and customer purchases; great for those interested in obtaining retail and customer service experience. All Shop Assistants must be available for training and assist in the shop at least once a week for a minimum of 3 months.
